Introducing my favorite cocktail: the Agave Margarita. This is an easy, refreshing drink made with everyday ingredients and no bottled margarita mix. Agave nectar naturally sweetens the cocktail, keeping it balanced, lightly sweet, and vegan-friendly. Make a single serving to unwind, a pitcher for guests, or blend it for a frozen version.

It’s warming up here in Atlanta, which means margarita season is here. Few things beat a freshly shaken margarita with agave and lime when temperatures climb. These cocktails are bright, citrusy, cooling, and slightly frothy—perfect for sipping on patios, pairing with Mexican-inspired meals, or bringing sunshine to any summer gathering.
If you love agave, you can also enjoy it in nonalcoholic drinks like oat milk matcha lattes, shaken oat milk espresso, or turmeric lattes for a natural sweetener that plays nicely with citrus and spice.
Ingredients

Blanco tequila: Also called silver tequila, this clear spirit has clean agave and citrus notes that make it the ideal base for an agave margarita. If you want to splurge, choose a high-quality blanco for the best flavor.
Fresh lime juice: Use freshly squeezed lime for the brightest, most vibrant flavor. A citrus press makes quick work of juicing.
Triple sec: An orange-flavored liqueur that adds citrus depth and light sweetness to balance the lime’s acidity.
All About Agave Nectar
Agave nectar is actually a syrup made from the agave plant, the same succulent used to make tequila. Its flavor complements tequila naturally. Compared with granulated sugar, agave is sweeter and less viscous than honey. I prefer agave for margaritas because it’s natural, vegan-friendly, and has a clean sweetness that doesn’t overpower the lime and tequila.
Agave syrup comes in light, amber, and dark varieties. The deeper the color, the more concentrated and caramel-like the flavor becomes. For margaritas I recommend light agave so the syrup doesn’t compete with the fresh lime and tequila.

Recipe Variations
Give your margarita a twist with one of these easy swaps:
- Mocktail: Use a zero-proof tequila alternative and an alcohol-free orange cordial instead of triple sec.
- Spicy: Add slices of jalapeño to the shaker and garnish with additional jalapeño slices.
- Blended: Combine ingredients with 1 cup of ice in a blender and blend until slushy.
- Blood orange: Replace most of the lime with 1 ounce fresh blood orange juice (reduce lime to 1 tablespoon).
- Tropical: For pineapple, passionfruit, or mango versions reduce lime to 1 tablespoon and add 1 ounce of juice or puree of your choice.
How to Make Agave Margaritas
- Salt the glass (optional): Rub a lime wedge around the rim and dip into a shallow plate of salt.

- Combine: Add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.

- Shake: Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds, until the shaker feels cold and frosty.

- Strain and serve: Add fresh ice to a chilled rocks or coupe glass, strain the margarita into the glass, and garnish with a lime wheel or wedge if desired. Enjoy.

Jenné’s Recipe Pro-Tips
- Shake well: Vigorous shaking combines and aerates the cocktail, producing a smooth, frothy texture. Shake until the shaker is cold.
- Sweeten to taste: Triple sec adds sweetness, so start with 1 teaspoon of agave and add more if needed.
- Glass choice: Serve in a rocks or coupe glass depending on presentation preference.
- Chill the glasses: Cold glassware keeps the cocktail cool and reduces dilution—chill glasses in the freezer for 30–60 minutes when possible.
- Rim the glass: Run a lime slice around the rim and dip it in coarse salt or Tajín for a bright, savory finish.
Make It a Pitcher

To serve a crowd, scale the recipe to a pitcher. Stir until the agave dissolves and serve over ice.
Pitcher measurements (serves ~8):
- 1 cup fresh lime juice
- 1 cup triple sec
- 2 cups blanco tequila
- 1/3 cup agave nectar
Assemble: Combine all ingredients in a glass pitcher and stir until the agave is dissolved. Add ice, stir again, and serve.
