Homemade Edible Face Masks: Simple DIY Recipes with Video Tutorial

I love a good homemade edible face mask. They’re simple to prepare, free of harsh chemicals, inexpensive, and enjoyable to make. They also feel luxurious, and I appreciate how my skin looks and feels afterward.

When I was younger and struggled with acne, I felt very self-conscious about my skin. I longed for clear skin and spent a lot of time experimenting with ways to improve it. After switching to a vegan diet, my skin began to clear up significantly, and I worried less about unexpected breakouts. My skin isn’t perfect, of course, so I still prioritize reducing stress, eating well, and giving my skin gentle daily care.

Once a week I make one or more masks to help repair daily damage, calm inflammation, and keep my skin looking fresh and youthful. Below are the masks I turn to most often to maintain a healthy glow.

coffee cocoa face maskCocoa Coffee Scrub & Mask

This rich, fragrant scrub removes dead skin cells and helps even your skin tone. Antioxidants in coffee and cocoa (or cacao) powder can help repair free-radical damage, reduce inflammation, and may help prevent breakouts. It can be used on the face and body. Apply to very clean skin, scrubbing gently as you spread the mixture. Leave on for about 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water while continuing to exfoliate. This mask is messy; any leftover portion can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Use 2–3 times per week.

1 tbsp coffee grounds (freshly ground or leftover)
1 tsp cocoa powder (raw cacao powder preferred)
¼ tsp sea salt
1 tbsp maple syrup

Combine the ingredients, apply to clean skin, let sit for 10 minutes, then gently scrub and rinse completely.

papaya face maskPapaya Turmeric Mask

Tropical papaya is great for snacking and for the skin. When applied topically, papaya’s enzymes help slough away dead skin cells and can even out complexion. Turmeric reduces inflammation and adds a healthy glow, and it can help dry out pimples. Fresh lemon juice helps fade dark marks from acne scars. Use this mask every 1–2 weeks; if you have sensitive skin, patch-test before applying to your entire face.

Eating fresh papaya also supports digestion, which can benefit your skin and overall health.

2 tbsp ripe papaya, mashed
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp fresh lemon juice

Mash the ingredients together, apply to clean skin, leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.

aloe matcha face maskAloe Matcha Mask

This mask is especially soothing and restorative, ideal after using an enzyme mask or following sun exposure and hot, sweaty days. Aloe vera hydrates and reduces inflammation, while matcha green tea supplies antioxidants and nourishing phytonutrients. Like the other recipes, you can use this on the body as well.

¼ cup fresh aloe vera pulp
¼ tsp matcha green tea powder (or ground green tea leaves)

Blend the aloe and matcha until smooth using a coffee grinder or small food processor. Apply to skin and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing.
