When I went vegan 5.5 years ago, stylish, ethical vegan bags were hard to find. For a while I relied on fast fashion from stores like Forever 21 and Target, until I learned more about the environmental and social costs of those products. With encouragement from my partner I began choosing more ethical options, and I’m thrilled at how many fair-trade, sustainable, and fashionable vegan bag brands exist today.
I enjoyed modeling several beautiful vegan bags and compiling the list below of ethical handbag makers. Vegan fashion has grown into a lasting movement, and I’m excited to follow new brands as they develop and improve their practices.
Below are details on the bags shown in the video and a longer list of vegan bag companies organized by category.

MATT & NAT, based in Montreal, is one of the most recognizable all-vegan bag brands. Known for minimalist design and a broad range of signature styles, they emphasize sustainability by using linings made from recycled plastic bottles and polyurethane (PU) instead of PVC for their vegan leather. The brand also visits partner factories to maintain relationships with owners and workers. The name stands for MAT(T)ERIAL + NATURE. Featured bag: Chanda in Bordeaux (often discounted).

Angela Roi, based in New York City, designs timeless luxury vegan bags made with high-quality polyurethane leather and gold-plated hardware. They also partner with animal welfare organizations and donate a portion of sales. Featured bag: Jules Bucket Bag in Light Beige.

* KIPLING; $$
Kipling has made playful, practical backpacks and luggage since the late 1980s. Many of their bags are vegan and they use vegan leather where appropriate. Kipling has taken steps to reduce environmental impact—operating a Zero Waste distribution center in the U.S., developing fabrics that use significantly less water and recycled polyester, and maintaining worker health and safety guidelines. Featured bag: Ravier backpack in Gleaming Gold.

DEUX LUX; $$
Deux Lux offers a range of stylish, affordable vegan leather bags, typically using polyurethane instead of PVC. They focus on functional, fashionable designs. Featured bag: Madison Fold in Black, which converts between clutch and chain-strap styles and offers generous space for a compact bag.
